چکیده

We report results of Chandra X-ray and VLA radio observations of the Galactic accreting black hole V404 Cyg (GS 2023+338) in its quiescent state. V404 Cyg is detected at its faintest level of radio and X-ray emission with a 0.5–10 keV unabsorbed luminosity of 8.3 × 10 (d/3.5 kpc) erg s. The X-ray spectrum fit with an absorbed power-law model yields a photon index of 2.17 ± 0.13. Contrary to previous findings, this clearly indicates that V404 Cyg undergoes – like most black holes in quiescence – a softening of its X-ray spectrum at very low luminosity compared to the standard hard state. The quiescent radio emission is consistent with the presence of self-absorbed compact jets. We have also reanalyzed archival data from the decay of the 1989 outburst of V404 Cyg in order to quantify more precisely the correlation between radio and X-ray emission in the hard state of V404 Cyg. We show that this correlation extends over five decades in X-ray flux and holds down to the quiescent state of V404 Cyg. The index of this correlation (∼ 0.5) may suggest that synchrotron self-Compton emission is the dominant physical process at high energy in V404 Cyg. However, this index is also consistent with scale invariant jet models coupled to an inefficiently radiating accretion disc. We discuss the properties of the quiescent state of black holes and highlight the fact that some of their properties are different from the standard hard state.

The Quiescent Spectral Energy Distribution of V404 Cyg

We present a multiwavelength study of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg in quiescence, focusing upon the spectral energy distribution (SED). Radio, optical, UV, and X-ray coverage is simultaneous. We supplement the SED with additional non-simultaneous data in the optical through infrared where necessary. The compiled SED is the most complete available for this, the X-ray and radio brightest ...

The 2015 Decay of the Black Hole X-ray Binary V404 Cygni: Robust Disk-jet Coupling and a Sharp Transition into Quiescence

We present simultaneous X-ray and radio observations of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cygni at the end of its 2015 outburst. From 2015 July 11–August 5 we monitored V404 Cygni with Chandra, Swift, and NuSTAR in the X-ray, and with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Very Long Baseline Array in the radio, spanning a range of luminosities that were poorly covered during its previous ou...

Advection-Dominated Accretion Model of the Black Hole V404 Cyg in Quiescence

We have analyzed archival ASCA data on the soft X-ray transient source V404 Cyg in quiescence. We find that in the energy range 0.7 to 8.5 keV the spectrum is a hard power-law with a photon spectral index between 1.8 and 2.6 (90% confidence limits). We present a model of V404 Cyg in which the accretion flow has two components: (1) an outer thin disk with a small annular extent, and (2) a large ...

Zooming in on a sleeping giant: milliarcsecond HSA imaging of the black hole binary V404 Cyg in quiescence

Observations of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg with the very long baseline interferometer HSA (the High Sensitivity Array) have detected the source at a frequency of 8.4GHz, providing a source position accurate to 0.3mas relative to the calibrator source. The observations put an upper limit of 1.3mas on the source size (5.2AU at 4 kpc) and a lower limit of 7× 10 K on its brightness temper...

Swift observations of V404 Cyg during the 2015 outburst: X-ray outflows from super-Eddington accretion

The black-hole binary V404 Cyg entered the outburst phase in June 2015 after 26 years of X-ray quiescence, and with its behaviour broke the outburst evolution pattern typical of most black-hole binaries. We observed the entire outburst with the Swift satellite and performed time-resolved spectroscopy of its most active phase, obtaining over a thousand spectra with exposures from tens to hundred...
